Before you go
Arm yourself with knowledge about the political, economical, and cultural environment of your host country before you leave. Also, visit the Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada website, which provides information and assistance to Canadians living abroad.

Before packing your bags, you should check the administrative and customs regulations of the country in question.

Passports

You and all family members, including any babies, must have a valid passport. Many countries even require that you hold a valid passport for six months prior to taking up residence abroad. Passport applications and information can be downloaded from the Passport Canada website.

Visas and work permits

Most countries require foreigners to obtain a visa or work permit in order to reside, work, study, and in some cases, enter their country. Don’t turn to fellow travelers for information on this matter – contact the Embassy or Consulate of your host country for specific visa requirements. Visas should be obtained before leaving Canada and you should apply well in advance of your departure date as the application process can be long and time consuming. Always be polite, diplomatic and courteous when requesting an application, as your personal conduct may play a more important role than the actual application forms. You should never, under any circumstances, consider bribery in order to obtain a visa if you are initially refused.

Many countries consider this to be corruption and could punish you in consequence. For certain countries, you may be required to leave the country temporarily to renew your visa, i.e., if you change jobs. Get informed on the subject. If you have dual citizenship, make sure that you still have the right to work in you country of origin.

Medical certificate, vaccinations or proof of HIV testing

Some countries include a medical certificate or proof of HIV testing as an entry requirement, particularly for long-term residents and students..

Residency permit

If you are planning to work abroad for a long period of time, you may need a residency permit. Consult the embassy or consulate of the country in question for more information.

Alien Registration Card

Your host country may also require that you obtain an Alien Registration Card, which you will need to carry with you at all times for identification purposes and as proof of your status. You may also need to have your name entered into a municipal registry, upon which you will obtain a certificate proving that you are officially registered.

International Driver’s Licencec

Many provincial driver’s licences are accepted in various countries for short visits. However, if you are planning on staying in the country for an extended period of time, you may need to apply for a local licence. For more information, visit the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) website. Keep in mind, every country has different rules of the road, so take the time to familiarize yourself with them.

Academic records

If you have children who will be moving with you, familiarize yourself with all of the schools in your host country. Keep in mind, comprehensive correspondence courses are also available and can be used to replace or compliment the curriculum in question.
